How Do I Feed My New Puppy

Feeding Recommendations

You should feed your new puppy 3 times a day with Puppy Food. The food is given dry without any liquid added.

DUE TO THE RECENT CONCERN ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY FROM TAURINE DEFICIENT DCM IN DOGS – WE ARE NO LONGER RECOMMENDING THE GRAIN FREE DOG FOODS. MANY, MANY STUDIES ARE TAKING PLACE TO DETERMINE WHY THIS TRAGIC SITUATION IS OCCURRING. VETERINARIANS ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE RECOMMENDING OWNERS TO IMMEDIATELY DISCONTINUE FEEDING THE NEWER FOODS ON THE MARKET AND SWITCH BACK TO A FOOD THAT HAS BEEN AROUND ALONG TIME….. SINCE THIS ISSUE WAS NOT OCCURRING IN THE PAST.

FOR THIS REASON, LAKESHORE DOODLES IS CURRENTLY USING IAMS SMART PUPPY FOOD WITH ALL OF OUR LITTERS…

It is quite normal for your puppy to be nervous for the first day or two, which may affect his appetite. You should expect him to eat normally by the second day he has been at your home. If he is nervous, you can soak his food with warm water to soften it, which may entice him to eat until he is feeling settled in.
Simply mix twice as much warm water into the bowl of food and let it sit on the counter for 30 or 40 minutes – just until the water has been absorbed. Allow the puppy to eat as much as they want, then discard or refrigerate the leftovers. This
should only be done as a treat and not for the everyday feeding program. Dry food is essential for keeping the puppies teeth nice and clean!

We recommend that you offer more than enough food 3 times a day. Simply fill a large bowl and give it to your pup for 20-30 minutes. Take away anything that was not finished at the end of each feeding. This will allow him to eat more when
he is going through a growth spurt and less when he is not. Puppies are the same as little boys who are growing! One day they don’t eat enough to keep a bird alive, then all of the sudden they are eating you out of house and home!

If you continually measure small portions out for your pup he will not have the extra nutrition needed during times of growth.

Puppies that are hungry because they are only fed a limited amount of food whether they are growing or not can become more destructive in your home as they may chew more trying to find something to stop their hunger pains. If they know that they will have enough food as needed each day, they are less likely to develop a voracious appetite as well.

Some dogs who are fed restricted diets would literally eat a 40-pound bag of food if it was left unattended. Our puppies who grow up without being heavily restricted often can be free-fed as adults – and they do not ever overeat!

There are exceptions to this type of feeding schedule for sure. Different breeds are more prone to obesity problems – these
breeds or individual dogs should be restricted for their own health.

Overeating and excess weight is a genuine concern and should be avoided entirely! By closely monitoring their weight you will be able to determine if your pup is eating too much.

When your puppy reaches about 4 months of age you can decrease the number of feedings to twice a day. As your puppy reaches about 3/4 of his adult height you will want to closely watch his food intake. Some pups will begin to get chunky if they continue to eat as much as they want at this stage. Keep an eye on their weight by feeling their rib cage.

You should be able to feel their ribs without putting a lot of pressure into it. If you cannot-then begin measuring out
appropriate portions of food. You can get a good idea of how much to feed by looking at the feed recommendations on the side of the bag.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF WE WANT TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER BRAND OF FOOD?

If you do decide to switch to another brand of food – be sure to make the change very gradually.

We would highly recommend feeding our Puppy Food for the first week or so until the puppy has had time to adjust to his new environment. Food changes can be hard on a puppy and can easily cause loose stool or digestive system upset.

If you do change foods begin mixing 3/4 our food with 1/4 of the new food for the first few days. Then increase the mix to 1/2 of each food for several more days. Until finally about 1 week later you can feed only the new food.

Your puppy’s stool should continue being firm after begin switched if you are feeding a good quality food. Foods that contain more fillers and ingredients that simply pass right through without being digested will produce more stool than
better quality foods with less fillers.
