We stayed in budget motels<\/a>, but rarely the cheapest and they were all good.\u00a0 We usually ate out once a day and otherwise self catered (so we often spent a bit more on accommodation for a microwave and fridge).\u00a0 Our accommodation cost averaged\u00a0$71 a night<\/strong>, so we could definitely have saved money here with some lower standards.\u00a0 We spent\u00a0$322<\/strong>\u00a0on gas over the entire journey.<\/p>\nThis price does not include all our activities. We spent\u00a0$2772<\/strong>\u00a0on our flights Melbourne \u2013 Los Angeles return on Virgin Australia and\u00a0$1646<\/strong>\u00a0on our flights Los Angele \u2013 Miami \u2013 Santo Domingo\/Santiago \u2013 Los Angeles on American Airlines booked on expedia.<\/p>\nTotal trip cost?<\/span><\/h2>\nJust under $15000 for 70 days!<\/strong><\/p>\nYou could also think of this as\u00a0$214 a day<\/strong>\u00a0which is actually only slightly more than what it costs us to live in Melbourne a day.\u00a0 Take away the big cost of the flights and it was only about\u00a0$151 a day<\/strong>\u00a0for the four of us.<\/p>\nWe kept to our budget which seemed like an extra achievement as our budget was based on Australian dollars.\u00a0 When we made our budget, the Australian dollar was on par with the US dollar.\u00a0 Once we were there, the Australian dollar was closer to US$0.90 which made everything more expensive than planned<\/p>\n
