Is Jamaica Safe for Families to Visit
Jamaica has a reputation for having crime problems, however this is sometimes not deserved and is certainly not relevant to tourist areas. Tourism is very important to the island and thus huge efforts are made to keep this jewel safe. As a result tourist areas are extremely safe for everyone, including families. You simply need to exercise common sense, just as you wouldn’t go into known bad areas at home, the same applies to Jamaica. The majority of locals are hard working, friendly people that warmly greet visitors.
Security
All resorts use security guards to ensure only guests and day pass purchasers gain entry. Your Ocho Rios villa is located in an upscale private community that is gated and has 24-hour security. The government has special police known as the Tourism Courtesy Corps, that patrol all tourist areas and this does a good job of keeping the crime rates in these areas very low. Millions of people visit Jamaica each year without having any safety worries. The majority of violent crime occurs in particular areas with inner city poverty and gang issues, something not relevant to tourist spots. Despite this, it is always important to exercise caution and get advice from the villa staff before venturing somewhere outside of the tourist areas. It is also best be careful after dark and stay away from the beaches at this time.
Driving
Traveling by car is a great way to see the island and experience the real Jamaica. The best way to do this is to use a driver. Road conditions in Jamaica can be questionable. Road signs seem to be scare, drivers aggressive, and roads can be poorly maintained. Your driver will be local and well able to safely transport your family to your destination. They will know the best roads to take and what areas are safe to visit. When using a taxi always make sure it is a licensed taxi.
Don’t Be Flashy
Like traveling to any destination it is best to avoid bling; the same applies to Jamaica. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry and carrying lots of cash. If your kids have gadgets, such as iPods or Nintendo DS consoles tell them not to take them out in public areas. These are just common sense practices. If you’re aren’t flashy, it is less likely that a thief will target you.
Activities
All activities in Jamaica and the Ocho Rios area cater to tourists. Your family’s enjoyment and safety is their top priority. Safety briefings are provided when necessary and any safety gear provided. You don’t need to worry about any crime happening when you are participating in activities. They all take place in family friendly, safe environments.
