When you’ve finally satiated your desire to remain poolside or meander along the shores of the exquisite Caribbean Sea (all accessible from your villa of course), there’s only one way to truly immerse yourself in the ambience of all that Ocho Rios has to offer.
Sampling the local life will truly fill you with that Jamaican spirit, so here are some of our tips to help you to mingle with the local people and understand all that your new home has to offer.
- Welcome to Ochi – You may have heard Ocho Rios referred to as ‘Las Chorreros’ which was the old Spanish name for it meaning rapid rivers after the Dunn Waterfalls (the English mistranslated into Ocho Rios – ‘eight rivers’). To simplify matters, the locals refer to it quite simply as Ochi.
- Let’s dance – Wherever you are, Jamaicans love to dance. In Ocho Rios you’ll always sense the underlying infectious rhythm of local life. You’ll be more than welcome to participate wherever you go; the townspeople will adore your willingness to be part of their community. If you’re not confident about your dance techniques, simply allow yourself to be absorbed by the gentle reggae beats. Your natural reserve will soon disappear.
- Try the patois – All Jamaicans speak English but it is often sprinkled with patois which may take some getting used to. Listen carefully, ask the locals to teach you some patois and try speaking it in conversations with the Jamaican people. To get you started, you may want to try ‘Wha’ gwaan?’ (‘How are you/What’s happening?’) or if you’re truly satisfied with your vacation ‘Boonoonoonous’ means ‘wonderful’. It’s the ultimate compliment.
- Sample the local food (and drink) – Jamaican fare is guaranteed to dazzle your tastebuds with its blend of spices and tantalizing cuisine. While you’re visiting choose from curried goat, coconut milk, an array of seafish and a delicious bread called ‘Bammy’ to name but a few. Don’t forget the renowned Jamaican rum to end your evening. If you see a dish that looks divine, make a note of it on your return to your Ocho Rios villa. With your own dedicated chef available to tend to your every culinary desire, you’ll be dining on your own privately cooked Jamaican fare before you know it.
- Take it easy – Above all, living like a local in Ocho Rios means taking life at a leisurely, measured pace. Forget the frantic pace of your daily life and step into a whole new way of being. We understand that you’re here to replenish your energy levels and relax. Our Ocho Rios Villa affords you the opportunity to do just that amid blissful surroundings that fulfill every perception you have of paradise.
